Product Review 3: Laura Mercier's 'Mistress' lipstick

Today's cosmetic choice brought to you by the stunning Mad Men vixen Joan Holloway.

I was curious of the brands they use for Christina Hendricks' character, so after researching I came across this page and learned that 'Mad Men' makeup artist Debbie Zoller frequently uses Laura Mercier's lipsticks in shades 'Baby Lips' and 'Mistress'.

After looking at the difference between the two shades I decided to purchase 'Mistress'. I love the soft mix between pink and red that they've used to create this shade.

I bought mine off Ebay for 30 dollars which is a great steal for such a high end brand. I was a tad bit skeptical on how it would feel, as I've worn literally hundreds of brands of lipstick from dollar store to Elizabeth Arden. And it always gets dry and generally uncomfortable to wear. I find myself constantly wiping it off and re applying to make it feel fresh.

As soon as I received it in the post, I did my makeup and applied it. I initially noticed it's creamy texture. It's a very rich feeling creme and very different from any other lipstick I've used. The colour is just fantastic, I find it so flattering! I've been wearing it for about 4 hours now and it still feels moist. As it dries it doesn't clump like other lower end brands tend to do. It's definitely worth the price it's stocked at. I've never had any high end cosmetic products, but after using Laura Mercier lipstick, I feel like I've gotten celebrity treatment.

I highly, highly recommend this product (in this colour, and any other shade) to women who are looking for a rich, creamy lipstick in great shades. Treat yourself, ladies! your money wont go to waste!

1930s Gloves!

Yay! my 1930s gloves have finally arrived. They are just perfect. However, the thread/yarn/whatever that was used to crochet them obviously is old and is now drying out so it's quite easy for it to snap. So I suppose the hunt for an everyday glove is still on! But I just adore these, and adore the wrist length style as well.

Cheerio!

Product Review #2

The second review of the day is Rimmel London's 'Moisture Renew' in the lip gloss form.

My lips pre-gloss

According to the commercials this product renews moisture to dry lips and keeps them feeling moisturised for longer, and also the longer you wear it you will also receive long term benefits from it as well.

How do I feel about this stuff? I can honestly say this is the best coloured lip gloss I have ever used. It really does what it says it does. And for about $5 it's just the perfect little treat for your lips. The only thing you need to pay attention to is putting it on. Since it's coloured you don't want to apply it carefree like you would a normal, uncoloured gloss. Get your compact out, and make sure you apply it on your natural lip line, and fill it in. We really could do without a lipgloss moustache. Also, I'd suggest using lip liner to get a cleaner result.

There really isn't much to write here since I honestly have no cons about this product. It does exactly what it says it does, price is perfect and I'm satisfied all around with it.

There are various shades, but since I usually go with a red lip I chose a cherry colour.

Some other benefits with this product: Contains collagen and vitamins A, C & E.

I definitely recommend this product to anyone!

Product Review #1

Hello all, I have decided to start doing product reviews as I've been wearing makeup since I was 13 and have literally tried almost every brand/product out there when it comes to my face. I have had numerous success stories, and of course, numerous flop stories. Now obviously everyone's skin is different and reacts differently, so what works and doesn't work for me may be the opposite for you.

And also, keep in mind that if a foundation or other facial cosmetic doesn't turn out how you would like it may not always be the product, but it could be the way your skin reacts to it. Most of the time it's an allergic reaction. If you find your skin breaks out with various foundations you may want to try the brands Physicians Formula or Almay. These are slightly more expensive, but usually have natural ingredients which work well for people with allergies or various other skin conditions.

Now onto the review...

Product Review #1 L'Oreal's 'MagicSmooth Soufflé'

I spent about $20.00 on a 0.67 FL.OZ./ 20 ml pot of L'Oreal's 'MagicSmooth Soufflé'. Now, I would definitely say this is the most I've ever spent on foundation. But when I put it on my wrist for a colour test I noticed it felt like silk right after and this is what lead me to buying it.

'MagicSmooth Soufflé' is a mousse like foundation with a light as air feel. Well, that's what the commercial says. So I'm going to tell you how I feel about it. Basically, it is very light coverage and doesn't seem to put much colour onto the skin. I have noticed it seems to make my pores look larger which is definitely a no go for any woman wanting full coverage.

Another con is that it seems to 'ball up' around my eyebrows and uneven surfaces such as the dip between my nose and cheek.

The only pro in my opinion is the way it makes my face feel. It literally makes my skin feel like silk. Absolutely wonderful feel with no heavy scent.

I do not feel this product is worth the $20.00. However, I will still use it because of the price I paid. I find if you are applying this 'foundation' to a clean, non moisturised face it tends to 'ball up' and make the pores appear larger, as I previously stated. I find (for myself) the best way to a good result with this stuff is by applying moisturiser first, and then a liquid foundation you already know works with your skin, and then applying the 'MagicSmooth' generously to areas like the cheek, chin and bridge of the nose. I found it didn't co operate on my forehead, which seems strange. And then of course, your powder foundation.

I have applied this technique to one side of my face, and then on the other side I have used my usual routine.

The side with the 'MagicSmooth' definitely feels nicer, more smooth and overall just more pleasant.

However, this doesn't mean that this product gets a thumbs up from me! If the price were dropped about 10 dollars I would give it a thumbs *almost* up.

Thrifty!

I just love thrifting. I'd say it's my favourite sport! Just a week ago I bought some pretty good finds. Check them out!

The first shown is a hairdryer with various settings from 1968
Pictures of the options is shown in picture two. Still in great working condition as well!

The second shown is vintage (not sure of exact date, but assuming around '50s-'60s) pink electric
scissors by RIAM Switzerland

The third shown is a nautical bandana/headscarf

The fourth shown isn't really vintage, but they are influenced by Marie Antoinette style shoes. Just love them!

I can't wait to put my hairdryer to use for pin curl sets or various other cold sets!

Thanks for looking!

Delayed winter sickness

Wow! have I ever been under the weather lately. I managed to go all winter without feeling at all sick, and then WHAM! just as the warmer weather started moving in, I got strep throat. Got it about 2 weeks ago, and still feeling it a bit. It's honestly the worst pain I've ever felt in my life.

I had a pretty exciting weekend almost 3 weeks ago. A lovely boy came to visit me from England, and it was perfect to me.

So these are my reasons for the extreme lack of presence. However, I can assure you my vintage shopping obsession hasn't slowed down like my blogging. I've been bidding on quite a few vintage goodies.

I've won so far a pair of  1930s crochet gloves

A lot of vintage hair pins and clips

And my favourite, the item that completes my life is my 1950s cat eye glasses

And I'm bidding on various other things such as a playsuit, brogue heels and a swimsuit.

I will be in Toronto for most of next week vintage shopping and catching up with old friends. So I will most definitely bring my camera and show everyone the vintage life in Toronto. Should be a fun little post.

Another update, by Monday I should have blonde shoulder length hair. So I'm pretty excited about it!

Oh, and happy summer!

Another Introduction...

Hello dear audience, this is my second blog since my first was unfortunately deleted.

I posted quite a bit and the volume of my entries was quite extensive, so it's with a heavy finger that I type out another introduction about myself.

This blog will be contributed to by me, and me only. Unless one day I find a perfect partner in crime who is at least somewhat literate.

So basically this blog is following my life as a vintage enthusiast and I will contribute photos of my current treasures and finds, tutorials for hair and makeup, interesting photos, places to go and etc. Anything really that the everyday vintage gal finds interesting.

I started my vintage loving at a very early age. The television programmes I was brought up watching were usually of an older time period, or influenced by it. Such as my favourite 'Thomas the Tank Engine', you can tell in this programme that it is set probably around the late '30s to early '40s judging by the cars and outfits/uniforms. Another favourite as I got a bit older in 1996 was 'Night Hood' which as seen by the clothing the cartoons were fashioned in, cars and even architecture, that it was influenced by the 1930s. A few others I religiously watched as a kit were 'Rupert', 'Babar' and 'Tin Tin'. All of which obviously have undertones from an era long gone.

So my television choices really curbed my interests at an early age.

The one person who influenced me in the fashion department was my Grandma Jean, who I unfortunately didn't get to know better before she passed away, when I was probably 7 years old. She was such a fashionable diva. Always had her pin curls and heels. I remember a month or so after her passing my father and I sifting through her clothes in the crawl space, packing them into bags for the charity shops. And that's when I stumbled upon my first pair of 1950's heels. I was instantly infatuated with them, so much so I took them for myself, and I remember very clearly not taking them off until bed time. I remember wearing them so much that I lost the right shoe somewhere, probably the park playground. However, having trooper blood I refused to let that stop me. I still wore the left one and stayed barefoot on the other!

That was all just the beginning. It started a life of fashion enthusiasm which has never ceased, nor even faded.

I remember as a kid I dreamed of having a womans body so I could finally wear high heels and dresses. I even planned out how I would present myself. I think I would make my child self proud.

And now? well now it's become a full blown obsession. Sometimes, as obsessions are, it isn't always healthy. I fear I will be bankrupt on the streets with my 'Naturalizer' heels, shoes and my dresses in a box being used as a mattress. However, it's my lifestyle. It's what makes me happy and keeps me going. And I don't intend on stopping.

I invite any vintage lovers to ask questions, comment or even just enjoy my ramblings as I enjoy writing them.

Thank you so much for reading, and hopefully continuing to read, my china dolls!

Have a great week!
